LONG DISTANCE HOTEL REVISITED
TEATRO MARIA MATOS
24 a 27 March 2011
“Long distance hotel” is an artistic project that aims at building a virtual European community of artists as a process to create a theatre performance. Throughout seven months, several European artists from different countries will create a performance exclusively online and will only meet in person on stage. Distance, both geographical as cultural, will be the factor that binds them together rather then takes them apart.
Over the period of correspondence, the theoretical and critical Ana Pais, will witness the exchange of information and writing a draft documentation and theoretical research which, together with the correlation between the artists, will be available online. In this sense, Ana Pais is a “chronicler” of this unusual process of creating a show from a distance, examining the effects of distance and communication tools in the creative act.
This production will take place within the frame of ESTÚDIOS, a long term artistic project. In 2010, ESTÚDIOS will focus in promoting the collaboration between six European artists, from several countries. Using Internet as their main tool, these artists will be facing the challenge of creating a piece without ever meeting in person. How will each of the invited artists be able to translate his or hers creative process into a virtual language? What innovations, creative discoveries and new thoughts will be able to arise from an internet mediated process?
ESTÚDIOS is a regular collaboration between Mundo Perfeito, a Portuguese structure for the creation of theatre performances with the artistic direction of Tiago Rodrigues, and Teatro Maria Matos, one of Lisbon’s foremost theatres directed by Mark Deputter. In the last two years, Mundo Perfeito and Teatro Maria Matos have organized ESTÚDIOS, a project that aims to build bridges between different artistic works and identities, promoting collaborations between Portuguese and foreign artists. Throughout the last two years, ESTÚDIOS enabled the creation of pieces resulting from the collaboration between artists from Portugal, Brazil, Congo, USA and Slovakia.
