THE JEW

after The Jew of Malta by Christopher Marlowe

"When the music stops, in terms of liquidity, things will be complicated. But as long as the music is playing, you've got to get up and dance. We're still dancing..."

Since the summer of 2008, Mundo Perfeito and Teatro Maria Matos have annually organized "Estúdios", a meeting of Portuguese and foreign artists, resulting in one or several new creations. This year, Dood Paard, one of the foremost Dutch theatre companies, is joining the project. The Dutch/Portuguese cast of this performance will work in Amsterdam and Lisbon upon Christopher Marlowe's controversial masterpiece "The Jew of Malta". Probably written in 1589 or 1590, the play's plot is an original story of religious conflict, intrigue, greed, and revenge, set against a backdrop of the struggle for supremacy between Spain and the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean that takes place on the island of Malta. At the time of its creation, the piece stirred great controversy and maintained this provocative quality to our days. "The Jew of Malta" is considered to have been a major influence over Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice", but distinguishes itself for a vertiginous plot and the absence of any kind of morality of its crude and truthful characters.
